2018 Countdown: My Top 5 Matches of 2018

We will finish counting down the final moments of 2018 by reviewing my favorite matches of the year. I’m excited to see what 2019 will bring, as this is one of the best times to be a wrestling fan based upon the sheer amount of content from which we have to choose. I would even go as far as to say that you will not find the best content on USA or the WWE Network on Sunday nights. RoH, NJPW, MLW, All In and even Impact have provided memorable moments throughout the year. With all that being said, my first match for discussion with be from the WWE Network on a Sunday night.

5 Women’s Royal Rumble Match

The first ever Women’s Royal Rumble was perhaps one of the best Royal Rumbles of all. It had just the right mix of legends, up and comers and the best talent of both rosters. The match was booked well and seeing Asuka come out on top was great. Of course then the match ended and they gave Rousey, Asuka’s moment.

4 Flip Gordon vs Bully Ray, I Quit Match, Final Battle

Flip and Bully had one of the hottest rivalries of 2018 and this match was a great culmination to the feud. This match had anything and everything you would want from an I Quit battle, there was blood, run-ins and Bully threatening to put Flip’s girl through a table. This was a great match and wasn’t even the best one on the card.

3 Johnny Gargano vs Tommaso Ciampa, Unsanctioned Match, NXT Takeover New Orleans

I just put all their matches in a hat and drew this one out. Gargano vs Ciampa was NXT for 2018! All of their matches were great but since Gargano was fighting for his job, this one really upped the intensity. This match not only was the best match on a night full of great matches, it was the best match of Wrestlemania weekend!

2 Brotherhood vs The Ugly Ducklings, WVCW Miracle on the Mountain 2018

Until Final Battle, this was the best match I’ve seen in a very long time. You hear stories about guys just tearing the house down in front of small crowds, well I got to live it this year. These two teams gave it everything they had, like they were main eventing Wrestlemania at “The Garden”. They had high spots, brawling and chain wrestling. I cannot do this match justice and keep it short but I can say if you see either of the teams coming to your area, go see them!

1 The Young Bucks vs The Briscoes vs SCU, Ladder Wars VII, RoH Final Battle

So many spots, so many moments such an unbelievable match. This is what happens when you get three teams together who love what they do and who are the top of their game. What a way for The Briscoes to win their 10th RoH Tag Title Championship.

Final note on 2018: RoH Final Battle 2018, to me, was the best event of year. There was not a bad match nor a dull moment. If you can only go back and watch one event, make it this one!

This competes my counting down of 2018. I’m so excited to see what the next year brings and wish everyone a happy and prosperous new year…unless you’re like a really bad person, in which case I hope you reform your evil ways or wind up in jail or something!
